Thought we'd share this video interview with Ethan Nichtern, which is described by its makers thusly:
Inspiring interview with Ethan Nichtern, Founder and Director of The Interdependence Project (The ID Project) in New York City and author of the new book "One City: A Declaration of Interdependence". This is a fascinating and personal discussion of Nichtern's key idea of interdependence as well as an enlightening conversation about Eastern ideas in general, such as Buddhism and meditation. Nichtern talks about how there is a strong current desire worldwide for a new social consciousness that properly balances inner peace and illumination with informed social engagement and responsibility. ..

Sometimes it's great when Dharma and pop-culture collide -- like mixing peanut butter and chocolate.
This is one of those times.

In this video (which made CNN.com's front page today):
"Jim Carrey calls for people to support the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi. He also decries Burma's military regime for recruiting more child soldiers than any other country in the world, destroying 3,000 villages in eastern Burma, and forcing 1.5 million refugees to flee. He appeals to viewers to join two organizations:

...isn't it interesting, the places where Buddhas are popping up nowadays?
A little while back, rapper Xzibit's "Concentrate" video -- featuring the
Buddhist chant Nam myoho renge kyo -- was a Horse Video of the Moment. We
also VoTM'd the first, kind-of hip-hoppy video from Sakyong Mipham
Rinpoche, head of Shambhala International.
It seems that Singa Rinpoche, a thirty-year-old Tibetan lama, has gotten into Da Rap Game as well. He's released an album in which he mixes rap with Buddhist chanting in English, Chinese, and Tibetan. This hasn't done much to help his reputation -- he's frequently criticized for his too-Western ways (indulging in expensive clothes and cars) and his cavalier interpretations of his monk's precepts.
And then, there's the video.
No need for gratuitous snarkiness. Watch it and draw your own conclusions.
That is, if you can get through it!
...Ooops, that was gratutiously snarky.
Bad Horse!
(And actually, there's also something kinda awesome about the Singa video. In a way.)

Sometimes Dharma might appear to be only in the eye of the beholder. That was the first official Horse reaction when we received the clip to the left, from the bizarro clay-animation masterpiece "The Adventures of Mark Twain" from reader Dan Carew.
So we asked Dan to explain why he sent it. Dang if he didn't do a good job in what seems to be a pretty off-the-cuff little email. As he says:
Hrmm.. I suppose, well, the last line, for example: "Life itself is only a vision. A dream. Nothing exists save empty space and you - and you are but a thought." That's probably the most obvious one. That's Buddhism 101 right there, depending on who you talk to. Then you have a line like "I can do no wrong, for I don't know what it is." which well, at first seemed totally out there to me.. but then I thought, well, what if you look at Satan as just some kind of agenda-less distributor of consequence? I mean, your own ignorance echoing back on you doesn't do it because it wants to wrong you, does it? Your karma doesn't hold some kind of malicious agenda (Or virtuous one), right? Does that make any sense? hahahaha.. And even before that you have parts just illustrating dangers of materialistic desires - squabbling over the cow (The hand of Wrath will fall from the sky! And then you'll have an earthquake at the funeral!! Raarr!), kids gorging on the fruit, just oblivious to the world around them (See, Satan totally slipped out right there, "Where'd he go?" lol)... . what am I missing?
Watch the video and see if you do or don't agree. Either way: it's a trip, for sure.
